Welcome to Kuppah 2020, a way for each of us to reach out to our family, friends and colleagues and support Perth Habo.
Habonim Dror has a long history within Jewish communities around the world including over 70 years in WA. Many people took the opportunity to enjoy the Habo experience and take with them memories and friendships into later life. The PnF seeks to ensure that this tradition continues in Perth WA.
With cost of living increases and reduced financial support from Israel, the costs to support Habo Perth and ensure the continued presence of the community/habonim shaliach have increased considerably. PnF have an urgent need to secure a regular source of funds.
Kuppah is one of Habo’s many traditions and is still a part of every child’s Habo experience. The idea of each person contributing what they can to a communal fund and sharing that fund to ensure that everyone gets what they need. On Sundays, groups would use kuppah to buy hot chips from the Blythe Avenue fish shop.
Kuppah is a major part of the shnat experience where groups argue late into the night about how much of the kuppah funds could be used by a kuppah member to purchase a “gift of love” for his or her love interest!
Kuppah has ancient traditions. The Talmud and the Mishnah speak of the kuppah as an important tzedakah program in every synagogue where members make weekly contributions to support the needy within the community.
Our goal: 20 kuppott of $1,000 or $20,000 each year until 2020. Members of each kuppah decide how to go about filling their kuppah. It’s all up to you. It could be:
1 x $1,000 2 x $500 4 x $250 5 x $200 10 x $100 20 x $50 50 x $20
Some of you may wish to make more phone calls and contribute less dollars, others may prefer to contribute more dollars and make less phone calls. You make the Kuppah and you decide the rules (so long as there is $1,000 in it at the end of the day!)
